Description
The papaka is a crab. Crabs walk sideways. The papaka is the panel that runs across the bottom of the poupou (carved panels) inside the wharenui (meeting house). It represents the people who have 'come in from the side' specifically those who have married into the whānau. This is one example of how Māori are inclusive and show a sense of belonging has been a part of the culture for a very long time.Questions?
